Robert Howe (born 1832 in New York, died 1915 in San Francisco): moved to California in 1853; worked as a prospector in the
gold mines, later as an assay merchant in San Francisco; married Mary Ellen Hammond in Coulterville, Calif. in 1859; served
various terms in the California State Assembly (1858-1861, 1873-1875, 1888-1890) and California State Senate (1875-1881);
briefly served as Speaker of the Assembly in 1889.
